TSMC to start production of 5 nm “A14” chips in second quarter

Chipmaker TSMC has been awarded a contract to manufacture the A14 processors from Apple, according to reports collected by MacRumors. The chips will enter iPhones this year, production is expected to start in the second quarter of 2020.

“The sources said that the Apple 5G mmWave handsets expected to launch in 2020 would each have at least three AiP modules, which can also be supplied with the FC_AiP (flip-chip) process in addition to Info_AiP.” TSMC has worked hard to miniaturize its manufacturing process to 5 nanometers – down from 7 nanometers of manufacturing seen in the A12 and A13 – in order to secure orders for Apple processors in its iPhones for the fourth consecutive year .
