PSA: you can not use two CDMA SIM cards on the new iPhones

The new iPhones introduced eSIM technology for the first time in line. With this electronic SIM card you can more easily switch between providers. But you can not use two CDMA SIM cards on your device.

CDMA SIM cards

The Apple support page provides information about using a dual SIM card with an eSIM. Some exles of use:

  • Use a number for companies and another number for personal calls.
  • Add a local data plan when traveling outside the country or region.
  • Have separate voice and data subscriptions.

To use two different providers, your iPhone must be unlocked. If not, both phone subscriptions that you use must be from the same courier. However, if your eSIM comes from a CDMA provider (Verizon, Sprint), your physical SIM card does not support CDMA. You must use a card from a GSM provider (T-Mobile, AT; T).

This website has a full list of CDMA and GSM providers in the United States.
