Woman arrested in connection with hate crime

PALO ALTO – A 42-year-old Santa Clara woman is in custody following a racially motivated assault in Palo Alto, police said.

The incident was reported just before 8 p.m. Friday in the 300 block of California Avenue, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release.

Police said an investigation revealed that the victim, a man in his 50s of Middle Eastern origin, was talking on his cell phone when a white woman approached him and asked him for money. When he refused, he would ask to see his identification.

The man refused again and the woman pulled a laptop out of a bag she was carrying and hit it twice, police said. The woman also reportedly picked up a large wooden sign from the sidewalk and threw it at the man but missed it.

The man told police that the woman said she probably hates women and was “the reason the country was going down”.

The woman left the scene after a witness told her they would call the police.

At around 8:30 pm, the agents found the woman on El Camino Real near Los Robles Avenue. She was arrested and jailed in the Santa Clara County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and hate crime charges. According to prison records, she is being held on $ 30,000 bail.

Anyone with information on the incident can contact the police department at 650-329-2413. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call or text 650-383-8984 or send an email to Paloalto@tipnow.org.

Police say the woman hit the victim twice with a laptop and threw a large wooden sign at the man in addition to the verbal confrontation.
