Serial Productions, the creator of the hit podcast series, was purchased by The New York Times Company. Its shows will be promoted through the various channels of the parent company, including its website and newsletter.
Next time in series… from the “New York Times”
Sam Dolnick, associate editor who oversees the New York Times audio project, said in a interview:
The idea is to drive New York Times readers and listeners to Serial projects. There will be ways to help Serial tell more stories, bigger stories and, later, understand how our newsroom and theirs can coordinate even more deeply.
Additionally, The New York Times has formed a creative and strategic alliance with This American, which is the originator of the series. In a blog post announcing the move, Dean Baquet, Meredith Kopit Levien, Sam Dolnick and Stephanie Preiss wrote:
At The Times, Serial Productions will continue to do what it has done so powerfully, but with more resources and support it can publish more surveys and more storytelling series than ever before. His projects, including upcoming seasons of “Serial,” will air under the Times banner, expanding our reach in the lives of millions of people.
As of this writing, there is no indication that the content generated by these purchases and partnerships will go exclusively behind the New York Times paywall.
