Apple’s so-called “periscope” target for iPhone is on track for 2022, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. New suppliers are expected to come on board to fulfill orders for lens motor and voice coil parts, AppleInsider reported.
Two new suppliers are expected to enter Apple’s supply chain as the tech giant works to boost the iPhone’s camera capabilities, Kuo said in a note to investors on Wednesday. Korean lens supplier Semco and Chinese lens supplier Sunny Optical are expected to deliver parts in the second half of 2020 and 2021, respectively. Apple is signing a contract with the new companies to further diversify the supply of lens components for iPhone, iPad and Mac, the note said. Reduced lens costs and the development of new technologies are also cited as benefits. Semco, for example, is expected to ship an iPhone periscope telephoto lens in 2022, with the company winning about half of all orders. Largan + Alps / Minebea are also expected to provide parts for the new mechanism.
