The zoom has become, it is fair to say, synonymous with videoconferencing in this work of the domestic era. Wired watched how he beat Skype to become so dominant.

Not that people use as much as Zoom, which has benefited both from being free to download and more reliable than its competitors. (Eric Yuan, founder of Zoom, has been working on web conferencing software since arriving in the United States in 1997 from China to work for WebEx). A survey carried out in April 2020 among 1,110 American companies by Creative Strategies showed that 27% of companies mainly use Zoom for video calls and meetings, compared to 18% for Teams and 15% for Skype. Many companies quietly switched from Skype to Zoom in the years that followed, as Skype added more and more features that didn’t match the basic functionality of the service: making decent quality video calls. So when the coronavirus hit, what in the first half of 2017 would have been a call to download Skype to stay in touch became a request to download from Zoom.
