The new program will train black residents to be political candidates

Black residents in Montgomery County have a new training program and then run for public office.

The non-partisan program, called Rise and Run, will educate and prepare black residents for politics.

Kelly Leonard, a member of the Council for Advocacy and Policy Solutions (CAPS) advisory board, said in a telephone interview Monday afternoon that the idea for the program came to her in October as she thought about the upcoming November elections.

One of the voting questions prompted residents to vote for the addition of two district council members to the nine-member county council.

“I thought, it wouldn’t be great for us to be proactive in identifying black candidates to train and well positioned to fill some of those empty seats,” he said, adding that the need to amplify black voices is greater than ever.
