The best Apple engineer moves on to a mysterious new project

Dan Riccio, one of Apple’s top designers, is moving to a mysterious new role in Cupertino.

After joining Apple in 1998, Riccio has worked on a ton of innovative products, from the first iMac to last year’s AirPods Max and M1-powered Macs. He has now become Apple’s “vice president of engineering”.

Moving on, Hedgehog says he “will focus all my time and energy at Apple on creating something new and wonderful that I couldn’t be more excited about,” according to a press release on Monday.

News of a management shock within the circular walls of Apple’s headquarters always generates speculation. Especially when a high-profile vet moves to an unnamed special project that reports directly to CEO Tim Cook.

Will Riccio be working on the secret Apple Car, which has undergone its share of changes over the years? Late last year, Apple’s head of artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea, would take the lead on the project. And 2021 brought a wave of new Apple Car rumors, including a report that Cupertino could partner with Kia to produce an automobile. Meanwhile, Cook predictably remains a mom on the subject.

It is also possible that Riccio may face the suspected virtual and / or augmented reality headsets Apple wants to produce.
