UWB seems to be the next big thing in the mobile phone industry, with more and more companies interested in equipping their phones with such features.
According to a recent relationship, companies like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are already planning UWB updates for their phones, with the flagships likely to receive it as early as this year.
Ultra-broadband, or UWP, allows for a wide variety of applications based on short-range radio transmission, and Apple was the first company to introduce it to the mobile phone industry by allowing the iPhone to turn into a car key.
The Cupertino tech giant has already signed a partnership with BMW in this regard, but of course, UWB can also be used for other features, including location-based smart trackers.
On the other hand, Apple’s rival Samsung announced UWB support on the Galaxy S21 earlier this month, again with the aim of allowing the smartphone to play the role of a car key. The South Koreans are already working Audi, BMW, Ford and Genesis for those capabilities and the launch is expected to take place later this year.
After Apple and Samsung, now more Android device manufacturers are aiming for everything, with UWB so it should become a common feature in the mobile market sooner rather than later.
Of course, while UWB’s expansion into the mobile phone industry is gaining speed, we still need a compatible car to drop traditional keys. As you can see, only a handful of automakers are currently in talks to bring those capabilities to their models, so we’re probably still several years away from the time when locking and unlocking a vehicle with your phone becomes mainstream.
Meanwhile, Samsung and its partners are expected to share more information on their partnership with UWB by the summer, with the first cars supporting the Galaxy S21 likely to go on sale later this year.
