An increasing number of online user reports suggest that some Apple Mac M1 models are susceptible to a fast user switching bug that spontaneously activates the screensaver and leaves the user unable to close it.
In macOS Big Sur, fast user switching allows users to quickly switch between user accounts without having to log out completely. Based on posts in MacRumors forums, Apple community forums, and on Reddit, however, a screensaver can sometimes take over Apple Silicon Macs’ screen without warning, making the desktop workspace completely unavailable.
While the screensaver is displayed on the screen, the mouse pointer is still up and moving, but nothing else works and users need to close and reopen the lid of their MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, or press the Power button with light / Touch ID or use the key combination Alt-Command-Q to return to the login page.
