Roku’s latest update finally includes Apple Music, but what’s the point of a better version not included

Fans of Apple Music who own Roku devices will be thrilled to learn that the music streaming platform is now available as an app on the Roku Channel Store. That excitement, however, would have quickly turned to sadness when they discovered that Apple Music on the Roku did not have the best version of the altar, Spatial Audio. While the Roku update includes more than 90 million songs and 30,000 playlists targeted for owners of branded TV streaming applications (or Roku TV owners), the absence of Spatial Audio is a major disappointment.

It means that anyone who wants to stream Apple Music through their Roku device is missing out on a unique three-dimensional audio stream delivered by Apple’s Spatial Audio technology, and with the amount of content available in this format grow all the time , preventing users from accessing. these songs seem like a strange decision. When Spatial Audio is performed correctly, it can have a dramatic effect on the way music is perceived – especially albums that may have been heard hundreds of times. Moving different devices within a virtual space – which makes the world more realistic thanks to the smart headphone technology inside the AirPods Max, AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro headsets – gives everything a single piece of music needs to shine.

It means you can hear things you may not have noticed before, making your favorite songs play new again. Sometimes, the effect is so convincing, that it feels as if you are sitting there in the theater with the interested parties. Of course, Spatial Audio does not work for every piece of music, but it is a major selling point for Apple Music, and something that sets it apart from other streaming services, such as Spotify – and not all Roku device owners will miss out on .

There is no support for Lossless Audio either, so you will not get high quality streams (even if you have a pair of high-end stereo speakers sent to your TV). Again, that means you may not hear all of the music you love, which is a great deal for all audiophiles. These releases are not unique to Roku. In 2021, the PS5 will finally get support for Apple Music, with users already limited to Spotify if they want to choose their music to play their game sessions.

Again, Apple Music app on PS5 does not support Audio Spatial. While Sony did not give us a reason for this, we note at the time that it may have felt that there were too many technical obstacles to fly in order to send a live audio to Apple Music subscribers. After all, you need to use a pair of compatible Apple or Beats headphones to enjoy the format, which will require you to hook a Bluetooth adapter to the PS5 – you cannot easily connect a pair of wireless headsets to the native console.

It’s a little easier to do this with Roku devices thanks to a feature called Private Listening, which lets you listen to your content through your wireless headsets using the Roku smartphone app – you just need to pair your headsets with your smartphone over Bluetooth.

A fairly simple solution is available for anyone who wants to use a pair of wireless headsets with their Roku device – which makes it even more surprising that the company will not allow Spatial Audio for its new Apple Music application .
