OSX.Dummy Mac Malware targets cryptocurrency users on Slack and Discord channels

Security researchers have spotted a new family of Mac malware that is currently being advertised on the cryptocurrency-focused Slack and Discord channels.

The existence of the malware came to light last week when it was discovered by Remco Verhoef, manager of ISC SANS and founder of DutchSec.

Verhoef claims to have spotted scammers, posing as administrators, mods, or other key figures in the cryptocurrency world, by posting messages urging users to type a long command into their Mac terminal, claiming to help with various problems.

The command (see below) downloaded a 34 MB binary called “script” to the / tmp folder and then ran it as root.
