A new campaign targets users of mobile and other connected devices by using cloaking and obfuscation techniques to evade detection. The malvertising campaign was called LuckyBoy and consists of a tag-based approach and a multi-step attack method. Andriod, Xbox, and iOS users are targeted in the attacks. According to cybersecurity researchers, the campaign began in December 2020 and has since penetrated 10 demand-side platforms, most of which are based in Europe.
However, there have been campaigns that impacted users in the United States and Canada. The campaign allegedly uses a variant of the malware that allows attackers to detect whether active debuggers, test environments, or blocks are present on the target device. In that case, the malware will not run. LuckyBoy was found by researchers operating on a schedule and in bursts, with small campaigns launched on Thursday nights and continuing throughout the weekend.
