The Apaches oppose the overhaul of the forestry service of a huge copper mine
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – On Friday, the US Forest Service released an environmental review that paves the way for the creation of one of the largest copper mines in the United States, against the will of an Apache group that has been trying for years to stop the project. The Forest Service now has 60 days to deliver a stretch of land in the Tonto National Forest east of Phoenix to Resolution Copper Mining, a joint venture of international mining companies Rio Tinto and BHP. Environmentalists say the Forest Service has come under pressure to push the review past the finish line before President Donald Trump leaves office, complicating their efforts to reverse the land swap. The forest service said this is not true, while the mining company claims that publication has already been delayed for months.
