MacOS Monterey 12.1 update causes problems for MacBook and iMac models equipped with M1 chips

Macs received the latest operating system software update in October 2021. MacOS Monterey was unveiled on Monday, October 25th, around 6pm UK time. In this post, we get all the news about Apple’s new desktop operating system, macOS 12, aka Monterey, including missing features from the latest version – such as Global Control, SharePlay, and the Legacy Digital version, which will make it easier to unlock the device of someone who has died, both of which have been delayed until later in 2021.

We also discuss the problems people are facing with the new operating system – including reports that macOS Monterey is bricking some Intel-powered Macs and reports that there are problems with the USB connection following Apple’s update to macOS Monterey (macOS 12) is available for download (as long as you have a compatible Mac) on Monday 25 October 2021 around 6pm UK / 10am in California. However the latest version is macOS Monterey 12.0.1.

Monterey’s latest beta is macOS 12.1, Apple, developers and public testing are testing the third beta of that. Apple has been running Apple Beta Software for Monterey since it was first announced back in May 2021. The beta program allows developers and public reviewers to try out the new software before it is released to the public. Even with Monterey now the beta program will continue and Apple will continue to test features that did not make it to the final version, such as Global Control and Digital Legacy. Apple says Global Control will not be available until later in 2021 so we can expect it to start developing further in the next beta. Apple will also be available to fix possible bugs.

If you want access to the beta versions of macOS read how to install beta macOS. Warning though, beta software can be buggy and cause problems with your Mac.

Betas usually fixes and fixes versions, and sometimes introduces fixed problems in subsequent updates – which is why Apple does not recommend installing beta on a Mac it uses as its primary device. The biggest changes in the beta version so far include changes to the layout of the address bar and tabs in Safari.

The current beta version of Monterey is macOS 12.1. New feature with SharePlay for beta testing. SharePlay is a feature that will make it possible to share content with friends across all Apple devices. SharePlay has featured in previous betas since it was announced at WWDC, but has not been launched in Monterey.
