macOS Big Sur: The startup sound is back

Longtime Mac users will remember that the Mac used to “ring” when turned on. Apple removed the beep in 2016, but with macOS 10.15 Catalina, users could reset the beep via a file command in the terminal.

The ringtone is back by default in macOS 11 Big Sur. In the short video clip below, you can hear how the buzzer sounds on my (run down) 2014 MacBook Pro with the Big Sur beta.

If you mute your Mac before you turn it off, the buzzer will not play the next time you start your computer. If you’d like to turn off the ringer, Apple has a setting in the sound system preferences that you can adjust.
