For nearly two decades, the release of a new PC operating system has been an event. Upgrading costs money; you had to go to the store to get the necessary floppy disk or CD; the new operating system had to be different and better in practically every way. I’ll never forget the first time I started Windows XP or the day I finally managed to get back to Windows 7.
In recent years, Apple has taken a much simpler approach. Still rent event space and advertise new features, but your new OS comes more like a tune-up than a new car. Open the app store, click a button and do a poof – some things change but everything mostly stays the same.
