Mancos community leader and colorful personality Athalie “Mac” Neely will celebrate her 100th birthday on Wednesday.
The Mancos Marshal’s office arranged for fire trucks from departments across the Four Corners region to participate in an automobile parade at The Valley Inn on January 27, starting at 1pm. Neely, resident of The Valley Inn, will be sitting on the outside porch as a safety measure against the coronavirus.
Mayor Queenie Barz will officially proclaim January 27 as “Mac Neely Day” in Mancos.
Before coming to Mancos, Neely was a registered nurse and restaurant owner, among other things.
Neely came to Mancos in 1995 as a member of AmeriCorps. Her scholarship writing skills led to a Great Outdoors Colorado grant for the Mancos River Walk.
Neely was President of the Mancos Chamber of Commerce in 2001 and 2003 and was named Citizen of the Year by Mancos in 2011.
Local gallery owner Kelly Kilgore is delighted to have met Neely when she first moved to Mancos.
“He led an incredible life,” Kilgore said. “It’s a sweetness. We all love it. “
Neely, a lifelong Girl Scout, stays in touch with the Scouts she has influenced to date. He also wrote a regular column for The Journal.
The Valley Inn is located in Mancos at 211 E. Third Alley.
