Mac malware found for new and old machines, payload a mystery

Researchers from the Red Canary security team say they have discovered Mac malware that also has a version targeted at new M1 machines, but it’s unclear what it does or what the infection vector is.

Sensing engineers Wes Hurd and Jason Killam said a safety brief that the new malware, called Silver Sparrow, differed from traditional Mac adware in two ways: it used JavaScript to run and had a related binary compiled for the M1 architecture.

The first native malware targeting the M1 platform was recently discovered by well-known Mac security expert Patrick Wardle.
