NEWCASTLE – Though they held well below average in attack, MacArthur’s boys made up for it with a superb first-half defense by winning 67-51 over Washington in the first round of the Otho “Sweet Pea” Curtis Invitational on Thursday.
The Highlanders, in second place in the Class 5A polls, kept the Warriors just 16 points in the first half and maintained a 25-point lead in the third quarter when coach Marco Gagliardi began to empty his bench. The manager praised his team’s defensive performance, but admitted that it was necessary given the way his normally high-scoring team threw the ball.
“We just shot really bad, probably our worst shooting game of the year,” said Gagliardi. “We were getting good looks, we just didn’t take them down like we usually do.”
Brandon Cowan led the way with 17 points, scoring four triples, three in the 3rd quarter alone.
The Highlanders (12-2) advance to play Christian Heritage, who beat Bishop McGuinness. Tipoff is at 5:30 pm
Meanwhile, the Mac girls have outgrown JV Moore, 67-35. They will face Newcastle at 4pm
