Local athletic directors explain game-related decision making in the MAC winter sports season
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Middle Athletic Conference has officially announced plans to have a shortened winter sports season today, but not all of our local MAC schools and teams will attend.
King previously announced that they will not play. Lycoming and Wilkes have opted for all of their respective sports, while Mercy will play women’s basketball, but not men’s basketball.
“It was a challenge at times,” said Mike Clark, Lycoming’s Athletics Director via Zoom. “Lots of meetings where you absolutely spin the reels and lots of meetings where you wonder if you’ll be able to do it, but when the schools have figured out the test piece, then you feel better about the likelihood of doing it. Probably 35% of ours. students are college athletes, right? It’s a significant part of who we are. ”
“The opportunity to compete in winter sports, we are thrilled,” added Chuck Edkins, Director of Athletics Mercy. “We believe we have the protocols in place, as all presidents do to say“ let’s play. ”It’s about the student-athlete and that’s the unique and wonderful aspect of Division III, where the student-athlete is definitely the priority here. Our men’s basketball team had more conversations with each other. They came together as a unit and said, ‘you know what? I just don’t think this is the time for men’s basketball to compete’ and we brought it up. on the flagpole and our administration accepted and here we are. “
