IPhone users now have access to the latest Google Maps widgets

Because iOS does not have widgets, some iPhone users have been jealous of their Android-toting friends for years. This finally came to an end with iOS 14, when Apple finally released its Home Screen widgets. Most people believe that the iOS implementation of widgets is higher than Android. While Apple Maps has its own iOS widget, Google Maps now has two that require an 5.74 app to install for iPhones running iOS 14 and higher, and iPads with the iPadOS 15 beta installed .

Note that these Google map widgets should not be confused with any widgets found on the iOS widget page such as Travel Times, Transit Departures, Local Guides and Traffic. 9to5Google reported on Wednesday that a pair of Google Maps widgets are now available for the iOS Home screen. The two widgets include one called “Find Nearby Places” that uses a search tool similar to Google’s iOS Gmail and search widgets.

And Google hints in release notes that more Maps related widgets are coming. “In this release, we are launching our first Home Screen Widgets program to help you plan and navigate to the end of your journey.”

To install the widget, press and hold the empty Home screen. Click the “+” button in the upper left corner and select the Google Maps widget. If widgets do not appear, you may want to remove Google Maps and re-install a new feature from the Store app.
