We’re really psyched for iOS 16, which is set to arrive later this year, most likely after WWDC 2022 in May. iOS 15 isn’t the most amazing iPhone update, with only Updated Notification Center, a new Safari, and a few Memoji options (who used them?). According to rumors, iOS 16 will be a further major upgrade, with interactive widgets, speed keys from the lock screen, and new health tracking capabilities.
But it seems that not everyone who uses the current version of the operating system will get it. New rumors suggest that the three phones currently supported by iOS 15 will not be in line for the upcoming major software update. So who will lose? According to the latest rumors, the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and 2016 iPhone SE 2016 – all of which can run iOS 15.4 – probably won’t get iOS 16. It’s surprisingly nice that Apple rolled out iOS 15 across all iPhones running iOS 14, leaving no one on the way. But with iOS getting bigger and more powerful – and requiring increased amounts of storage and computing power, it’s unlikely Apple will continue to be generous. The first iPhone 6S and iPhone SE will be 7 and 6 years old later this year, so they’ve got handy innings for software updates – certainly better than most Android phones.
It is rumored that iOS 16 will introduce a widget of widgets, now called InfoShack. What will they miss? LeaksApplePro says there is a 60 to 70% chance that iOS 16 will see an extension on InfoShack – Apple’s name for a great widget that it hopes to integrate with other, interactive widgets. There is also the advantage that we will get fast action shortcuts that can be used from the lock screen as well as minor improvements to Files and Reminder applications and some visual and algorithmic improvements to the Music application. Other leaks have suggested that there will also be some new health tracking features. For what we want to see, this YouTuber’s iOS 16 idea is a fun look at how much the iPhone can be integrated – if Apple wants.
Of course, it is not the end of the world for iPhone 6S users. You will still be able to use your phone running iOS 15.4, but you may get this as a sign that it is time to upgrade if you do not want to miss the new features. It is also worth remembering that even having a new version of iOS does not mean you get all your versions either.
