In Kwai Chung, on Monday, an unemployed man who allegedly stole 13 iPhones in under 20 seconds at a Mong Kok store was arrested.
At about 2pm on Monday, the owner of a Podium Christian mobile phone shop in Mong Kok left his store unattended to collect money from another nearby store. A man took the time to walk into an unsafe store, stealing 13 new iPhone 13s.
After reviewing the CCTV footage, police identified a 50-year-old man and arrested him on the same day. The clothes she wore then were also taken from her home.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the man could be involved in four other cases, where he allegedly stole four phones from four different phone stores in the Yau Tsim Mong area between October and November.
He has been charged with five counts of stealing a total of 17 phones worth HK $ 160,000 and will appear in Kowloon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Police said that in four separate incidents, the suspect entered the store under the pretext of being a customer, removing security devices from unattended phones and turning them off while the employee was otherwise disturbed.
