How to share your WiFi password from your iPhone

We have it. Since data breaches happen all the time, it’s important to have a secure WiFi password. But when your friend comes to tweet the latest Bachelor in real time, it can be tedious to type in a password that looks like a tap-dancing cat on the keyboard. Thanks to Apple’s developers, there is now a feature that helps you share your WiFi password from your iPhone.

First things first: Make sure both the device sharing the password and the device receiving it are up to date with the latest versions. Otherwise, this function will not work. Apple added it with the iOS 11 update, so password sharing is only possible with a device with this version or later. If your devices are up to date, skip the next section and go straight to how to share your password.

How to update to the latest version of iOS or MacOS

Before you update your iOS on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, make sure you’ve backed up your device. Whether it’s your thesis or that reckless TikTok, we don’t judge – just make sure all your valuable data is saved. Then, plug in your device and connect to a WiFi network. Go to Settings, then scroll down to General. If a new update is available, a small red dot will appear next to the Software Update button.

Tap on Software Update, which will take you to an option that says Download and Install. When you tap this button, you may be asked to enter your device passcode. After that, the update installation will start automatically.

If you need update your MacOS on your laptop or desktop, make sure again to back up all your data. Since updating your operating system takes time and processing power, connect to a reliable WiFi source and make sure your computer is plugged in so the update doesn’t drain your battery. Once your device is connected to WiFi and connected, open System Preferences from the Apple menu, located in the upper left corner of the screen. When the System Preferences window appears, click Software Update. All available updates will be displayed here. If an update is available, click the Update Now button to start the installation. The download will start automatically and, once finished, the installer window will appear. Follow the instructions in the window to complete the installation.

How to share your password

Make sure the WiFi and Bluetooth settings are turned on on both devices. The key here is that the email address you use for your Apple ID is saved in the other person’s contacts and vice versa. For example, if you share your WiFi password with your friend and the email address you use as your Apple ID is bachelor_lover@gmail.com and theirs is final_rose@yahoo.com, make sure your email address is saved in the contact of the your device informationon and their email address are saved in your device’s contact informationon. If you don’t remember the email address you use as your Apple ID, you can find it by logging into iCloud.com.

It’s pretty simple from here. Keep both devices close and within range of WiFi and Bluetooth. First, connect the device sharing the password to the WiFi network. Then, open the WiFi settings on the device that is receiving the password. A window will appear on the device sharing the password asking if you want to share the password with the other device.

Tap Share password and voila! The password is shared.
