Half-burnt banknotes found in the Southern Calcutta location: The Tribune India

Calcutta, January 24

Half-burnt banknotes of various denominations were found dumped in bags on the Kalighat area of the city on Sunday, police said.

The matter is under investigation, they said.

Eyewitnesses said the bags, containing half-burned bills of Rs 50, Rs 20 and Rs 10 were found in a landfill in Mukherjee Ghat at 4pm.

Locals gathered on the spot and were seen rummaging through the bundles of banknotes to find out if any of them could be used.

“I’ve tried to recover some of the notes, but they don’t seem to be useful anymore,” said one middle-aged man.

Police said a force from the Kalighat Police Station went to the scene, cordoned off the area and collected the remains of the half-burned banknotes.

“We are talking to locals to track down those who had downloaded the notes and also trying to find out how they were burned,” a police officer said. – PTI
