Johan Segertoft, head of the Gripen E program at Swedish aerospace company Saab, talks about the new version E in terms that might seem more suited to computers than military hardware: he talks about software updates and data layers, coding and multicore processors. “Our job is to let the pilot make decisions faster than the other pilot,” says Segertoft and, over the years, Gripen pilots have operated a few other hotshot fighters in international drills. The JAS 39E Gripen, which first flew last December, is the latest version of a Mach 2 fighter launched in 1987.

To the inexperienced eye, the Gripen E doesn’t look much different from its predecessors that flew 50 years ago. Jet fighters with delta wings and conical noses flying at twice the speed of sound and carrying a few tons of bombs and missiles under their wings were in circulation during the Vietnam War.
