Galaxy Watch 3, Apple Watch 7 may have blood glucose measurement function

While smartwatch makers have struggled for years to find a suitable place for smartwatches, Apple has pretty much created that space by focusing on health-related features that simple fitness bands couldn’t offer. This has mostly revolved around functions to measure and detect heart conditions, but a new report suggests that Samsung and Apple may be switching to a much-needed feature that will potentially save thousands of users from having to painfully draw multiple times a day.

One of the medical technology industry’s long-standing dreams has been to develop a non-invasive way to measure people’s blood glucose levels. Although there are home kits to do this, those still require you to prick your finger to take a blood sample. This method is cited as one of the main reasons diabetics do not monitor their blood sugar levels regularly, which could have fatal consequences.

At one point, Alphabet’s Verily Life Sciences subsidiary was looking to use smart contact lenses for that purpose. Although less painful, the process is still uncomfortable for anyone who has never worn contact lenses before. ETNews reports that Samsung and Apple may have finally found the most affordable and painless option of all.

According to the report, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch 3 may have a function to measure blood glucose levels using an optical sensor, somewhat similar to what is used to measure blood oxygen levels. Research conducted by MIT and Samsung suggests that the smartwatch could use Raman spectroscopy which measures the vibration of substance molecules when light is shone on them.

Samsung won’t be alone in that push, however, as the Apple Watch Series 7 may also have a similar feature, albeit perhaps using a different technology or principle. Before the potential beneficiaries of these features get too excited, however, you need to remember that these features still need to get approval from each country’s regulatory agencies before being enabled there.
