First, Eberhard and Tarpenning hope to build a completely new electric sports car. In 2006 they unveiled the design for their Tesla Roadster which went into production in 2008. With Roadster, Tesla achieved something that no company has ever had. They fully develop an electric car with practical specifications that can arguably meet customer needs. Previous experiments at this site have failed because, among other things, companies are trying to develop a battery that is powerful enough to keep cars on the road and an effective car that can fit inside a user car and accelerate to high speed.
The Roadster meets needs. The first model, launched in 2008, can travel nearly 250 miles on a single battery, with acceleration and top speed compared to most user-level sports cars. The Roadster uses a standard lithium-ion battery structure, common to most electronics, and customers can recharge the car in a standard outlet.
This does not, however, make Roadster a viable consumer product throughout. At its release the car was a little over $ 100,000, the most expensive customer in the market. Furthermore, the company immediately went into crisis of charging time. The original roadster may need between 24 and 48 hours to charge on a standard home exit.
