According to NBC News’ Zoe Schiffer, Apple shut down one of its Southlake, Texas retail stores on Wednesday after several of its employees signed a COVID-19. According to NBC News, a manager told staff on Wednesday that 22 employees had “shared their confidence in COVID-19,” and four of the store’s 151 employees reported positive cases shortly after Black Friday. The store will remain closed until Sunday.
The NBC News report highlights some worrying trends regarding the Southlake situation. An official said concerns had already been raised about the inability to maintain social silence. He and another employee said the store had become “shoulder to shoulder” on a black Friday. And a manager at a Southlake store has apparently asked staff to come in even if they have been called ill:
Apple’s official policy requires retailers to wear masks and test COVID-19 before going to work. They should also be tested for COVID-19 regularly: unvaccinated workers should be tested twice a week and vaccinated staff should be tested once a week.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Schiffer reported this month to The Verge that many Apple executives find work conditions to be unsatisfactory.
Most Apple employees will return to the offices in a hybrid service starting February 1st. The company first announced its hybrid service plans in May with plans to return in September, but that was postponed to January and then to February. Three parent companies Facebook have also updated its return to service policies recently. Offices will reopen fully on January 31st, but staff will be able to delay attendance by three to five months.
