A few years ago, Apple officially launched a new Find My AirPods feature that makes it easier to find lost AirPods using the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. AirPods implementation is not as robust as “Find My iPhone “, but it can still be useful if you’ve lost your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.
Read on for full instructions on how to take advantage of Find My AirPods …
Again, the most important thing to note is this Find My AirPods isn’t that sophisticated such as Find My iPhone. For example, AirPods need to be connected to iPhone via Bluetooth to work. This means that if the AirPods are too far away, you won’t get the full set of features, although Apple will help you track them the best it can.
How to use Find My AirPods
Find My AirPods is accessible just like Apple’s other “Find” services for Mac, iPhone, iPod, and Apple Watch. To monitor your AirPods, you can do this via iCloud.com or the “Find My” app on iPad and iPhone.
To use the feature, open the Find iPhone app and search for your AirPods in the device list. From there, you can see where your AirPods are on a map and in relation to other Apple products. If you tap the AirPods icon on the map, you will see the option to play a sound from the AirPods.
Once you start playing the sound, you’ll see the option to turn off the left or right AirPod or stop playing the sound. This option is not available for AirPods Max, as they are over-ear connected headphones rather than truly wireless headphones like AirPods and AirPods Pro.
The ability to mute the AirPods makes it easy to locate one or the other if you’ve only lost one. While the sound emitted by the AirPods isn’t the loudest, it should be loud enough to locate a misplaced headset in a relatively quiet environment.
One important thing to note is that all of these steps only apply if the AirPods are out of the case and connected to your iPhone.
If you have an AirPod that you have left in another location or that is not connected to your iPhone, you will see the last known location on the map and pressing the “Play Sound” button will display a “Sound Pending” Message: “You will receive a notify you when these AirPods connect to a paired device. “
Apples Find My AirPods feature it’s pretty useful for locating nearby AirPods, albeit less so for ones you may have left in another location. However, given the technical hurdles, the feature is useful and much needed considering the truly wireless design of the AirPods.
