Superflex Spotlight: Mac Jones School: Alabama Screening: Round Two – Three
College career: In a season worthy of Heisman, Mac Jones is thriving. Engaged in Alabama in 2017, Jones was largely inactive in his first few seasons, primarily serving as a starter on special teams. Jones had the opportunity to start in 2019 when former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained a late season hip injury. After filling Tagovailoa admirably, he was named starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide in 2020. He threw for 3,321 yards in 10 games, completing 76.4 percent of his passes and shooting for 27 touchdowns with just three interceptions.
The greatest strength Mac Jones possesses is his deep ball. It has a cannon and accuracy to boot. Many will wonder if it is really impressive what Jones is doing or if he is benefiting from premier talent in the position of the receiver. Don’t be fooled, Jones has the best deep ball in his class. He is also very protective of football. His ability to avoid turnovers while hitting deep shots will be what will make him draft.
One thing that kept popping up on tape for Jones was his odd footwork. He throws too often with his feet off guard, which is odd because he would normally make the ball float a bit, but Jones doesn’t seem to be affected. He still needs to perfect it in the NFL. His play while under pressure is a little troubling as he is not the most mobile quarterback and can often have happy feet in his pocket when he breaks. Its mechanics and pocket presence seem to be its biggest flaws.
A team with a solid offensive line and outside goals with high speed is the best scenario for Jones. Like Kyle Trask, Jones could benefit from sitting behind a veteran for a year as he learns an offense. Pittsburgh, with their penchant for fielding a solid attacking line and their ability to select the best receiving talent, looks like a match made in heaven for Jones.
Again, Jones’s fantasy actions will likely be determined by where he lands in the NFL. If he can get to a team that has an offensive line that allows him time in his pocket, then Jones will see his actions increase. If he ends up on a team with offensive line issues, he’s probably someone you want to avoid in fantasy. Keep in mind that a player who can throw the ball deep like Jones can be a valuable commodity in fantasy football. Deep ball touchdowns look good on your fantasy football team.
Rookie Draft Projection:
Mac Jones will likely be a late second round – a potential third round. He’s really worthy of a flyer in superflex leagues and if you can afford to be patient with him, it’s worth putting him on the bench.
