The Mac added support for a system-wide dark mode with macOS 10.14, and support for automatic switching to dark mode came the following year with Catalina. Since then, Apple has made few changes to the Dark Mode experience on Mac.
A new third party app, DarkModeBuddy, released today, expands the macOS Dark Mode feature with support for ambient light sensor-based mode switching.
Developed by Gui Rambo of 9to5Mac, DarkModeBuddy is a Mac utility that runs in the background to automatically switch between light and dark modes based on the ambient light sensor. For the uninitiated, the ambient light sensor is what determines the automatic brightness level as well.
