The use of ivermectin for the prevention or treatment of Covid-19 is unjustified, risky and unethical, according to the Covid-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee, it is not registered for human use and there is no scientific evidence that it is effective. Ivermectin is also associated with a number of adverse effects when used in humans.
Until more solid evidence is available, the routine use of ivermectin for the prevention or treatment of Covid-19 is not justified. Additionally, using unregulated products that claim to contain ivermectin is risky and unethical.
This, according to a note from the Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) on Covid-19, sent on January 7 to Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize.
The memo is signed by MAC co-chairs Salim Abdool Karim and Marian Jacobs.
