After the on-court win against Apple, software virtualization company Corellium announced on Monday a service expansion that allows customers to virtualize iPhone and iPad devices on individual accounts.
Previously, Corellium limited the virtualization of iOS-based devices to corporate accounts via its CORSEC platform, with Android tools available to both businesses and individuals.
The modify allows security researchers and other interested parties to run virtual models of iPhones and iPads on their host machine without paying for a corporate license. Pricing is based on the number of cores or virtualized devices, and the service is available as a monthly subscription or pay-as-you-go.
At the core of CORSEC is Corellium technology that allows the creation of a virtual iOS device in the cloud. Customers first select a device to copy and then are asked to download a particular iOS build directly from Apple’s servers. Corellium’s platform subsequently shows a “fully functional” replication device.
Targeting “true iOS – with real bugs that have real exploits”, CORSEC is used by security researchers to find bugs and vulnerabilities in iOS.
Apple does not license its software for use by Corellium, and the tech giant sued the company in 2019 for infringement of copyrights covering iOS, iTunes, and UI IP. That case was largely dismissed in December, when a federal judge found Corellium to bear its burden of establishing fair use.
Corellium says security was among the considerations taken into consideration when implementing iOS access for people. The company claims to monitor customers and has declined sales to business users in the past, policies that will apply to individual accounts in the future. When requesting access for an account, users will need to submit a use case and verify their identity.
