Arizona got their most skilled transfer player of the off-season. Western Michigan linebacker Treshaun Hayward he’s leaving that show to head west and play for the Wildcats, he announced Monday.
“I started my college athletic career at 17 with one goal in mind,” Hayward said in a Twitter post announcing his decision. “Since then I have grown as a student, athlete and person. I want to say thank you to the WMU coaches for giving me the opportunity to play college football. … Now I will be a graduate student athlete at the University of Arizona! “
The 6-foot-1 linebacker from Ypsilanti, Michigan is headed to UA with one season of fitness remaining as a graduate transfer, so he will bring plenty of experience to Don Brown’s defensive unit.
Hayward was named MAC 2019 Defender of the Year after racking up 142 tackles, 10.5 tackles per loss and five junior layoffs. This earned him the honor of being an All-America selection of Sporting News’s second team and an All-America selection of Phil Steele Magazine’s fourth team.
He went on to add 58 tackles in six games during the shortened 2020 season.
Hayward played WILL position for the Mustangs and with UA returning to a 4-3 defense under Brown, it’s certainly possible he’ll stay in that spot with the Wildcats. He will join a group of linebackers who continue to seek depth and more talent after going through a transition period in 2020 after losing key players like Colin Schooler and Tony Fields II to transfers.
Staring at the linebacker Anthony Pandy is set to return for another season with the Wildcats as several young players have been able to gain experience throughout the 2020 season.
Hayward will provide an upgrade in both experience and production for the group as he arrives in UA with 229 career tackles and 16 tackles per loss. His production has been resuming for the past two seasons once he was able to play a leading role. He had 37 tackles in his first two seasons at WMU.
The Michigan native is the seventh transfer addition for the Wildcats this offseason and the sixth to come on board under new head coach Jedd Fisch. It’s the second transfer the Wildcats have added in the past few days after the program picked up the Washington State quarterback Gunner Cruz during the weekend. Safety Maldonado Gunner (Northwestern), running back Drake Anderson (Northwest), defensive end Jason Harris (Colorado) and cornerback Isaiah Rutherford (Notre Dame) have also joined the show since Fisch was named as Kevin Sumlin’s replacement.
Baylor offensive lineman Davis DiVall signed with the Wildcats in December.
The addition of Hayward leaves Fisch and his staff in Arizona with two spots left to fill the 2021 class.
