Apple’s patent covering iPhone eSIM and Dual SIM reveals that it was first filed in China

On Thursday the US Patent & Trademark Office released a patent application from Apple that relates to the field of wireless communication, and more specifically to a user equipment (UE) with multiple subscriber identity forms performing a notification of improved network during SIM suspend / resume operations. The iPhone XS and XS Max were the first iPhones to use Apple’s eSIM for most of the world, while iPhones in China came with a dual SIM.

To ensure that the iPhone was adequately protected for this feature in China, Apple first filed this patent in China on July 10, 2019, as indicated in the partial patent docket graphic below. Their U.S. filing, revealed Thursday by the USPTO, was originally filed on June 29, 2020, nearly a year after their filing in China.

Apple also noted in the patent that “EU Dual SIM or multi-SIM devices have been particularly popular in newer developing economies such as China”.
