iOS and iPadOS 14 came out to the public on short notice just last week, and they did something previously unthinkable for the platform: it made it possible to change the default email and browser apps. Unfortunately, users quickly found that their default app choices were reset every time the device was turned off. But today Apple released iOS and iPadOS 14.0.1 and the main thing it does is fix the problem.
The update is available today for all users on supported iPhones, iPads and iPods. In addition to making users’ default app choices permanent, “fixes an issue that may prevent camera previews from appearing on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus”, fixes a bug affecting Wi-Fi connectivity, makes images display correctly on the News widget screen home page and solves problems with sending emails through certain mail providers.
Here are Apple’s iOS 14.0.1 release notes:
This update includes bug fixes for your iPhone.
- Resolves an issue that could cause browser and mail settings to be reset to default after iPhone restart
- Fixes an issue that could prevent camera previews from being displayed on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
- Resolves an issue that could prevent your iPhone from connecting to Wi-Fi networks
- Resolves an issue that could prevent emails from being sent with some email providers
- Resolves an issue that could prevent images from displaying in the News widget

The notes of the iPad are similar. The company also released watchOS 7.0.1, which “addresses an issue where some payment cards in Wallet were disabled for some users.” That update will also be out today. We are currently working on the Ars Technica review of iOS and iPadOS 14, which will be published in the next few days.
