As Apple produces more and more foldable devices – from supposedly smart rings and a “foldable iPhone” to shipping MagSafe Duo charger – it’s looking at ways to make the hinges stronger.
Among other criticisms of the new MagSafe Duo Charger, the most surprising was how quickly its hinge may fail. A newly revealed patent application shows that Apple is looking for ways to make device hinges more reliable, without increasing their volume.
“Electronic devices with composite fiber friction hinges” refers to the creation of a hinge with overlapping “elongated fingers”. Apple proposes that this can be used in anything from iPhones to speakers, but repeatedly focuses on smart rings or what it calls “finger devices.”
“Electronic devices can have parts joined with hinges,” the patent application states. “If not taken care of, hinge structures can be bulky, weak and prone to slipping.”
