Future cellular iPhones and iPads may have new technology to hide the antenna gap in the case, ranging from the strategic use of different materials, to something as simple as a thin layer of dye that mimics the case material.
One of the design problems of the iPhone and iPad is to produce a version that can effectively handle electromagnetic waves, the signals created and received by antennas inside mobile devices. Allowing the antenna to do its job means using materials in a way that prevents blocking of a signal or opening through the enclosure to the outside world.
Designing to house antennas is difficult, especially when you consider how Apple designs and builds its products. In the case of iPads, the back of the case is a single piece of metal, offering neither passage through a hole or slot, nor the use of materials that minimize the effects to the antenna signal.
One way to solve the problem is to use two parts …
