Rumors about a foldable iPhone have been floating around for quite some time now. We’ve seen various patents that suggest the Cupertino tech giant has been working on such a device to launch in the coming years. Now, a recent patent suggests Apple may be implementing an advanced gear-based hinge on its next foldable device.
The patent, “Folding electronic devices with rack hinges”, was recently unveiled by iPhone makers. This particular patent explains the use of advanced gears for the hinges of a folding device. As per description, this mechanism will allow a user to fold the display all the way down, making the foldable iPhone quite similar to Microsoft’s Surface Duo, on paper.
How will it work?
The patent notes that “the first and second portions of a housing for electronic devices for [foldable] the device can be joined with a hinge “. He also explains that the hinge could contain “toothed elements such as gears and a rack element” to bend a flexible display in either direction. Apple could certainly overdo it.
“The rack element can have a surface with curved portions. The gears may include rotating gears that walk along the curved portions of the rack member when the electronic device is folded and opened. The hinge may include gears which are fixedly attached to the first and second housing portions and which engage the rotating gears. The connecting elements can hold the gears and the rack element together, “the patent reads.
Put simply, this hinge mechanism will allow users to fold the next Apple device both inward and outward. Then, they can open it like a book for a big screen experience or fold it out all the way to have a compact dual-screen device in their hands.
Furthermore, the patent points out that this mechanism works with any type of display. “The display may be an organic light emitting diode display, a micro light emitting diode display formed by a matrix of crystalline semiconductor light emitting diode arrays and / or perhaps any other suitable display.” further adds the patent.
