Apparently, Apple has picked the perfect time to mess with the Mac.
The consumer electronics giant launched a new line of iconic computers with its first internal processor in mid-November. The company was convinced enough of the machines to remove older models that used Intel chips from its online store. It was no small gamble: Intel chips have been powering Mac computers since 2006, while Apple’s new internal processors use the completely different ARM-based chip architecture that had so far proved unpopular in PC devices.
Buyers seemed to be grabbing them in what is a sweet spot for PC sales. According to sales figures from market research firms Gartner and IDC released on Monday, Mac drive sales hit a record in the fourth quarter, which is also Apple’s first fiscal quarter. IDC estimates that sales increased 49% year-over-year to approximately 7.3 million units, while Gartner estimates that they increased 31% to approximately 6.9 million units. Apple stopped revealing …
