Apple extends service program for defective MacBook Pro

If you’re having trouble with your 2016 MacBook Pro backlight, you now have a little more time to fix it for free.

In 2019 Apple introduced a service program for defective MacBook Pro models sold between October 2016 and February 2018, read more about it in our compilation of MacBook problems, product recalls and repair programs.

Affected computers have a backlight that has completely stopped working, or vertical bright areas can be seen along the entire bottom edge of the screen.

The problem was caused by a slightly too short flex cable. A longer flex cable has been used since 2018, so newer MacBook Pro models shouldn’t be affected.

Apple has now extended the service program to be valid for five years from the original purchase date or three years from the service program start date (May 21, 2019), whichever is longer.
