Apple dethrones Microsoft and Nintendo as game behemoths

According to a NewZoo analysis, Apple has the third-largest gaming revenue of any publicly traded company in 2021, trailing only Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, and Nintendo. Apple estimates $ 15.3 billion USD ($ 21.3 billion AUD) of $ 126 billion USD ($ 175.6 billion AUD) profitable in 2021, and only Sony and Tencent surpassed that. Tencent, which owns games such as PUBG: Mobile and League of Legends, is a leading player in the sector with $ 32.2 billion USD.

Apple is able to achieve such a high revenue in the gaming market thanks to the huge growth in mobile gaming, which accounts for more than half (~ 52%) of the market. As Apple takes a big hack of all the purchases made through their App Store, and argues that it needs app developers to manage transactions through it, it is not surprising that they are on this list.

It is likely that 2022 will be very different, as both Microsoft and Sony introduced new properties (Activision-Blizzard and Bungie respectively) and the market shortage of exclusive gaming applications such as PC versions and consoles is starting to ease.
