Apple has the ability to enable a wireless charging feature on the iPhone 12 that would allow the device to charge future Apple accessories, according to an official FCC document first spotted by VentureBeat’s Jeremy Horwitz last year.
Apple states in the official FCC statement that in addition to receiving power from regular wireless chargers, the 2020 iPhone models can also act as wireless chargers themselves. “Currently the only accessory that can be charged by iPhones is a potential external Apple accessory in the future.”
While the report doesn’t specifically state which future accessory might be charged on the back of an iPhone, one possibility is that the wireless charging feature could be used to charge AirTags, Apple’s object trackers that will attach to objects of value such as wallets, backpacks, keys and more, which will then become traceable through the Where is app.
