After Baby Died of Fentanyl Poisoning, Apple Valley Mom Says It May Happen To You

A high desert mother whose child recently died from fentanyl poisoning is begging parents to talk to their children about how over-the-counter drugs can be laced with potent fentanyl opioid and about it.

“Sometimes it seems untrue and when I look at your picture I see that my child is not going to walk through the door, to hurt me or to joke or give me a hug,” said Drina Smith.

He says: “The disaster struck my home, under my nose, and when people did not think it could happen, they made a mistake.

Smith said in October, his son and girlfriend bought what they thought were two prescription drugs from a friend.

Shortly after taking one, Smith said his son became seriously ill.

“It simply came to our notice then. My husband did CPR on him, ”Smith said.

He said doctors told him the drug appeared to contain fentanyl.

It is a potent synthetic opioid that law enforcement officials say is often found in over-the-counter drugs sold on the black market.

Nineteen days after taking the drug Smith said his son died at the hospital.

“It’s all about choosing a fool – stupid medicine,” he said.

Hundreds of people in California die every year from fentanyl poisoning, which is why just last week, Orange County DA Todd Spitzer announced a new policy that allows drug dealers to charge murder if they in connection with the death of fentanyl.

“I will not let drug dealers go away with murder,” he said.

Riverside County’s DA already started policy earlier this year, and the San Bernardino County DA is working on a similar one.

“The person who sold my baby this drug is also on sale,” Smith said.

Smith said investigators are prosecuting a man who allegedly sold the drugs to his son, so he hopes to be arrested. He also wants other areas to have a hard time on pharmaceutical companies.

“Every pharmacist should know that we are following them and that is it. It is enough to kill our children, ”he said.
