For several years now, Chromebooks have slowly gained a rather dedicated following as former skeptics have become converts – and even prosthetists – of the lightweight Chrome OS and highly affordable laptops it powers. However, it hasn’t come close to challenging Microsoft or Apple – or even Linux – as the operating system of choice for the vast majority of consumers.
There are a number of reasons for this, not least Microsoft’s forward-thinking strategy of licensing its operating systems to OEMs, which has helped it capture more than 95% of the PC market from the beginning to the mid-1950s ’90s, a market position that is only slightly eroded due to the popularity of Apple’s competing OSX laptops and desktops.
At present, Windows installations account for just over 76% of desktop operating systems according to GlobalStats, a category that includes laptops. Apple’s OSX accounts for another 17% of desktop operating system installations, which comprises just over 93% of desktop installations.
