Math Nerds: Researchers found a pattern in apparently random distribution of Prime Numbers

I'll be the first to notice that much of this was about my mathematician head, but it's super cool. The short version is that some people with intellectual disabilities decided to treat primes as if they were atomic ps. Their model showed what a pattern might be in the distribution of prime numbers, something that was previously considered arbitrary. motherboard has one and here is a snippet:

Together with his student Ge Zhang and number theorist Matthew de-Courcy-Ireland, Torquato presented the primes computationally as a one-dimensional series of atoms and scattered light. The result, published in the Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment last week, was astonishing: not only did they create a quasicrystal-like interference pattern, but it was a kind of fractal pattern that had never been seen before. Torquato told Quanta Magazine this implies that prime numbers are "an entirely new category of structures", considered a physical system.
