Massive reconstruction of Apple Maps in the United States is complete as changes unfold in the Southeast

Apple has been working on a huge reconstruction of Apple Maps in the United States for the past year and a half. Now that the updates are rolled out across the country, Apple Maps uses only the data it has collected itself, can push the updates in real time, and offers much more detail for users.

As we reported on the news in June 2018:

Cue says Apple is now focusing on creating the “best map app in the world,” which requires “building all of our own map data from scratch.” He added that Apple decided it had to provide its own original map data, not just the app with third-party data providers, more than four years ago.

Advantages of the new mapping system include the ability to update and correct data in real time. Cue says the new map infrastructure will allow Apple to process roadwork and fixes much faster than the current version.

In the past few months, we’ve seen more and more regions acquire the new Apple Maps data. The deployment is now complete, the Southeast having received the modifications.
