On Monday, the IRS announced changes to its agreement with the tax filing industry. For years, the agency has been banned from creating its own free tax return system, like other countries do. In exchange for not being competitive, the tax industry has promised to make free versions of its software if you make an income below a certain amount. But companies like Intuit and H; R Block have added code to their web pages to make it more difficult to display their free products on Google. But now everything is changing.
“The improved process will strengthen Free File and give taxpayers another reason to consider this valuable software option,” said IRS commissioner Chuck Rettig in a statement. The agency hopes the changes will make the free option more accessible to taxpayers during the 2020 production season, he said.
